Hiketober

Photo note: Picture of Hikeotober last fall. Hiketober is here! Every October I spend every weekend during that month going on at least one hike. It is my way to re-connect with nature, get time to reflect or just enjoy being outside, and really serves as a form of meditation for me. I go by myself a lot. But also do hikes with my boyfriend or with friends. It is a great bonding activity that is just fun. And usually ends with a nice glass of wine, beer, or hot cider. Today I started my hike month, with a hike in the city. Due to 5dys of rain, the hiking in the woods and mountains in the area were just too muddy and wet. So instead, I picked a spot in the city I never go to and walked it for 2hrs. Fun way to explore and see new neighborhoods. Next weekend I’ll start my nature hikes pending weather. In the DC area, I typically do Sugarloaf Mountain, Billy Goat Trail, and one …

Refuel your body….so you can refuel your mind and soul

I woke up feeling down, a little sorry for myself, and just cranky. And I sulked for a hour or two. And for a bit I enjoyed sulking and being lazy. And that was totally okay. Then I was like…. It is sunny outside and I just need to get my day going. So I went to the gym and had a really hard workout lasting over a hour. I listened to some great music and just escaped my mind and exhausted my body. By the end, I was dancing to the music and had a huge smile on my face. Note: I still had a lazy Saturday afternoon afterwards but with a very different mindset. Sometimes it is as simple as a good physical workout to change your entire mood. And puts things in perspective. Refuel that body with a work out!

Refuel your Body with Water Aerobics…. (Yes, I said water aerobics)…..

Why don’t we play more as adults? It frees us to laugh, be silly, and ultimately relief some stress.  And are there some good ways to play while still getting a healthy work out? I would love some ideas.  I recently rediscovered one from my Grandma K’s bag of workout tricks. It was limited albeit but this was a good one. Water Aerobics. It is hysterical and so fun! You can dance freely under water like no one is watching (because they can’t see you). My prediction is it is the new workout wave. I love it. The older women that stereotypically do it found a hidden gem workout. If you actually work hard, it can be a good work out, plus the instructor is usually a character and the music is super fun. I laughed the entire time and got a work out in. I mean, what is not to love. And you are in the water so no one can actually see what you look like in a bathing suit or your flailing limbs …

Hiking….Good for your soul

I have found that hiking is one of the best forms of meditation and relaxation. It allows you to breath in the fresh air, listen to nature, feel the spirits and wind around you, and just enjoy the little things during the quiet moments of a walk outside. I love it. My goal is to continue to hike more. Hope you enjoy a hike sometime soon. It is good for the soul.

Sunday Morning Walks

I sometimes underestimate the power of a Sunday morning walk. I live in a city and it is the best time of the week/day to walk. The city is sleeping, you notice more of its beauty, it whispers to you as you walk…sometimes screams to you…to look at the architecture, everyone is so happy on these walks, and it is day of hope. The church bells are ringing, the sun is peaking through the clouds as the day opens up, and it is just so calm. It is a form of mediation for me. I usually do restorative yoga on Sunday evenings. If I can’t attend due to my schedule, then I always go for a Sunday morning walk. Today I went for two hours. Somedays I don’t want it to end and want the morning to stay forever so I can walk for hours. Somedays I like a companion to walk in silence with or to chat with as we see parts of the city for the first time (things we go by …

Balance

Each day I remember and try to practice balance. Some days it works out well, some days I fail. It is hard to maintain balance and not let work, duties, chores, or one part of your life outweigh the rest. It is my constant Achilles heel and my constant struggle. I realize that each day I am successful at balance, I feel more fulfilled. Even if that means forcing myself to the gym, or to visit with a friend when I’m exhausted or making dinner with my love or sleeping vs that extra hour of TV or even getting organized. Downtime is key in balance. Someone gave me advice once and I try to do it as much as possible. They said to always ensure you get at least 2 hrs. of downtime to yourself a week. Use the hours however you choose, but always find time to relax. It re-energizes you and your soul. I like to think this is separate from workouts. It is quiet time. A drive, a book, mediation, a walk….something …

And so the refueling journey begins

2015 has been a year of discovery for me. I have learned a great deal about myself through relationships (both in love, family, and friendships), work, and getting to know myself better. And I have learned that like most human beings, I have an ongoing struggle with work and emotional/physical burn out. So I set out to try to tackle how to better adjust and manage this proactively before I hit those moments. At times I am successful and at times, I go back to old habits. I wanted to start this blog to share my learnings, new tips as I learn them, and for others to share their learnings with me. I know I will make grammatical mistakes but hopefully spell check will catch them! And I know I will share ideas and ways of doing things that may not work for everyone. But hopefully as I share, we can explore together as I (and you) continue to grow. My goal is to refuel my mind, body, and soul so I can live the …
